“Essential Oils?”, you say, “But why??”
I was a scientist in a not-so-previous life. I love understanding how the body and mind work, down to the cellular and chemical level and how we can affect both physiology and psychology, with various practices and substances.
I am also in awe of nature and the universe. In awe of those things in this life that we cannot comprehend.
To me, essential oils have an alluring, mysterious quality. Before I was introduced to the oils, I didn’t quite understand what they were or what they did, apart from smelling nice.
And then I discovered the world and possibilities of essential oils with doTERRA. On my oily journey, the oil I have become most intrigued by is frankincense. Until I started learning about essential oils, all I knew was that it was one of three famous gifts and was somewhat precious. On further research, I found that frankincense has been used since ancient times by civilisations such as the Egyptians and Babylonians, and has been used in religious and sacrificial ceremonies. But why? What exactly is frankincense?
Frankincense essential oil, dubbed the ‘King of Oils’ (and for good reason) is distilled from the resin of Boswellia carterii, frereana, and sacra. Tree sap. Simple as that. But nature holds some magical gifts for us, and frankincense is one of them.
Where to start? The aroma! The aroma conjures up images of bustling bazaars and markets in the Middle East, and promotes feelings of peace and relaxation. Frankincense can also be applied topically to the skin and ingested, as long as it is pure therapeutic grade from a trusted source, such a DoTERRA.
On an emotional level, frankincense is known as the Oil of Truth, promoting feelings of love, protection and wisdom. Frankincense is also widely used in spiritual practice and can help enhance spiritual awareness and meditation. It is these aspects of aromatherapy that particularly fascinate me.
On a physical level, the properties of the King of Oils get even more exciting. As a quick summary, it is known to support healthy cellular function and immune function, and to have sedative properties*. It is also the best skincare product I have tried. There is so much right here to explore, I could write a thesis on each of these (I won’t).
The small aromatic molecules in essential oils are what afford frankincense all of these properties, and it is the abundance of similar compounds in much of plant medicine that many modern pharmaceuticals are inspired by and derived from.
The essential oil extracted from a plant provides us with all of the above properties to support and enhance our emotional, spiritual and physical wellbeing. I don’t know about you, but this blows my mind.
