It's Non-Negotiable

I learnt something recently from one of my teachers, that has had quite an impact on how I structure and prioritise my days, and that is the concept of non-negotiables.

Our lives are so so busy and we often lose ourselves as we run from one urgent situation to the next, without stopping to take time to connect to ourselves, align and move forward consciously and mindfully.

We all have a multitude of responsiblities to our families, children, friends and employers. However, in order for us to show up fully in all of the roles we play, we first need to take care of ourselves - as they say, you cannot give from an empty cup. We all have different ideas of what we like to do to fill up our cups, but we all need to do something. We all need some way of reminding us who we are, why we are doing what we are doing, what inspires us, and providing us with means to be our best selves and be as much use as we can to others!

This is where the non-negotiables come in; things we aim to do most days to feel good and keep us aligned with who we truly are.

These can be ANYTHING depending on your priorities, your lifestyle, your interests, the amount of time you have etc. but they should be things for YOU, and not depend on other people. And they can be small things that take 10 seconds, it's not about giving yourself more 'stuff' to do!

As I did this work, I realised what my non-negotiables are, and now I do my best to work them into most, if not all days. These are the things that fill me up and bring me back to my centre every time. 

Everyday I do yoga and meditate. This never looks the same from day to day; some days I have more time and loads of energy, some days I don't feel like moving so much and other days I feel like sitting in silence for 30 minutes. Some days I have to force myself because I have commited to a 40 day Kundalini meditation!

Another thing I do everyday is walk in nature - in the forest or at the beach. This is where I am happiest. Having two dogs helps keep me committed to this one I have to admit!

My third non-negotiable is to do some sort of learning. I am a student, always have been and always will be, and I love learning and personal growth. This always looks different from day to day. Sometimes I read, sometimes I am learning how to set up a website (!), sometimes I am studying for a course I am taking. It doesn't matter what it looks like, but I need to do this to feel like I am being me. 

So I have three non-negotiables and you could have more, but like I said, you don't want to add more things you need to do in your already busy days! You could have things like get up 15 minutes before everyone else in the house to enjoy the silence, eat at least one home cooked meal, read, spend time outdoors, journal, cook, have a bath, watch the sunrise, whatever it is that makes you feel good and aligned with who you are.
