What is Yoga?


Yoga is everywhere, all the time. Yoga is so much more than the yoga postures that are most familiar and practiced widely throughout yoga studios and homes everywhere.  The Yoga Sutras lay out 8 different aspects or "limbs" of yoga, of which the postures or "asana" are only one. The other limbs start out by laying the foundation for our attitude and treatment of ourselves and others, as well as yogic breathing and meditation.  The Yoga Sutras together with other ancient yogic texts and principles provide a complete framework of how we can live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.

Benefits of Yoga

Where to start with the benefits of yoga! There are so many benefits and on so many different levels of wellbeing, that I cannot provide an exhaustive list here. On a physical level, of course yoga supports our strength & flexibility, but it also supports all of our body systems in one way or another. Yoga works to balance our whole selves, on an energetic and emotional level. In the words of B.K.S Iyengar, "yoga can lead us on a journey to wholeness, inner peace and ultimate freedom". When we consider all 8 Limbs of Yoga, it provides guidance as well as allowing us to access our own inner guidance so that we can navigate our lives and move towards happiness and fulfilment.

The Yoga I Teach

I teach yoga influences by both Himalayan and Ashtanga traditions. There is a strong emphasis on the breath as you flow through Sun Salutations, followed by standing, seated and lying down postures with vinyasa. I also include pranayama (or breathing exercises), meditation and chanting.
